Cars can last many years if well-maintained, but none last forever. There comes a time when your vehicle can no longer be used. Maybe it was totaled in an accident. Perhaps the engine is beyond repair, and it will cost more to fix it than the car is worth. In these situations, you may be stuck with an inoperable vehicle.
If your car is no longer running, you don’t have to hold onto it. You can donate it to charity or have it recycled. That’s right—you recycle glass, plastic and paper products, and an auto wreckage yard can recycle your vehicle. Your car—whether it is running or not—can provide a good deal of scrap metal for a salvage yard. In fact, these yards are able to recycle 14 million tons of steel every year.
Scrap Metal Services is Chicago’s full-service scrap metal and auto wreckage facility. Mobile car crushing is one of our specialties. We understand that hanging onto an old car that cannot be used can be a hassle. These vehicles take up space and can be eyesores. If your old vehicle has seen its last trip on the road, contact us to see how we can help. We are always in need of steel, aluminum, brass copper, and iron. We accept all types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, tractors, trailers and other machines and equipment. You may not be able to use it, but we can. Contact Scrap Metal Services and we’ll take it off your hands.
The recycling process for cars can be complicated. This is because cars contain many parts as well as hazardous materials such as gas, oil, transmission fluids, coolants and refrigerants. Once these fluids are removed, then the wheels, battery and catalytic converter are also taken out of the vehicle. High-value parts such as alternators, starters, engines, transmissions, electronic modules and infotainment systems are also removed and often resold. They can be restored or sold as-is.
Sometimes the heater core and air conditioning system may be removed. If the car has airbags, they may also be removed, since they contain a hazardous material called sodium azide. Once everything is out, the shell of the vehicle is cubed or crushed flat. It is then taken to a hammer mill or shredder, where it is reduced to small pieces of metal. Rubber, plastic and glass is removed. The metal that remains is sold to steel mills, which recycle it.
If you have a problem with your old car, Scrap Metal Services has a solution. There’s no point in hanging onto an old junk car. A car that’s an eyesore and doesn’t run does you no good. Instead, sell it to a place that can do something with it. Scrap Metal Services can resell or recycle most of a vehicle’s parts and give you some money in return. Get rid of your junker today. Scrap Metal Services will take it, running or not. For more information, contact our Chicago location today by calling (708) 730-1400.
